I recently purchased a rebuilt car. I could only have the car checked out (change of VIN and engine number) after I took posession of the car because the seller would not release the car to me. I stupidly paid him a deposit and we signed an Purchase and Sale Agreement and he gave me the licensing documents to go and have the car transferred into my name.

I wanted to make sure that there were no illegal dealing prior to the car being sold to me, so I took it to the police to check that the engine and chassis numbers were all in order. The police impounded the car because the VIN number was changed.

The vehicle had a new body and therefore a new VIN number.

I need advise please, because I have now lost my money and the car has been impounded and the police won't release it. The police say that the only reason for the impound is that the body has been changed. We have given them proof of the body being purchased from a reputable company (normally buy and resell insurance write-offs)

What do I do, where do I go. The documentation is all in order with the licensing department.
